New Delhi: The Eiffel Tower grew tall by six metres on Tuesday after a new digital radio antenna was installed on the top of the French monument, reported Reuters.
The Eiffel Tower now measures 330 metres after the DAB+ (digital audio) antenna was airlifted onto the Tower’s peak by helicopter
The late 19th century French monument was built by Gustave Eiffel.
During its construction the Eiffel Tower became the tallest manmade structure and surpassed the Washington Monument. It held the title for four decades until the Chrysler Building in New York was topped off in 1929.
As per TripAdvisor, the wrought-iron lattice tower is one of the most visited tourist spots in the world, the above-mentioned Reuters report stated.
The 19th century French monument was once used for broadcast transmissions for more than 100 years with the height of its pinnacle changing numerous times as ageing antennas were replaced.
Some Twitter users did not miss the chance to give their funny reactions to this news. While one of them said French authorities fed the Tower with protein supplements, another one said that it was the heat the elongated the 19th century monument.
Live television footage showed the helicopter lowering the antenna onto its base atop the tower, where workmen made it secure in an operation that lasted less than 10 minutes, reported Reuters.
