An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 hit in Afghanistan on Thursday, however, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages. The seismic activity in Afghanistan was strong enough to be felt hundreds of miles away in India, where tremors were felt in several areas including in Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.
As per the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 hit 277 kilometres northeast of Kabul at a depth of 255 kilometres at 11:26 am.
"EQ of M: 5.7, On: 29/08/2024 11:26:38 IST, Lat: 36.51 N, Long: 71.12 E, Depth: 255 Km, Location: Afghanistan," NCS said in a post on X.
As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake in Afghanistan was measured at 5.4 with the epicentre 28 kilometres from Ashkasham.
The tremors of the quake were felt in several areas neighbouring of Pakistan and India. In Pakistan, jolts were reported in Islamabad, parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
Thursday's seismic activity brought back the memory of the powerful earthquakes that struck Afghanistan last year in October, killing thousands of people in the western region of the country. Three catastrophic quakes hit Afghanistan last year-- one of magnitude 6.3 on October 7, another also of magnitude 6.3 on October 11 and a third of Magnitude 6.4 on October 15. As per a report by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), nearly 1,500 people were killed in Herat and the surrounding districts in these earthquakes.
