The takeoff and landing operations at Germany's Berlin-Brandenburg Airport was closed on Thursday due to unauthorised access by climate protesters. The activists broke on to the airport runway and glued themselves to the tarmac, causing temporary closure and delays to flights, according to a report by Sky News.
The activists, from a group called Letzte Generation, were also seen riding bicycles across the shunting area - bringing air traffic at the Berlin Brandenburg Airport to a standstill for some time, reported the news portal of Sky News. Some of them also climbed through a wire fence that had been cut to access the runway.
The group was demanding public to stop travelling by air and the government to end subsidy to the sector in order to cut flight-related emissions.
"Most people — about 80 percent of the world’s population — have never flown in their lives. One affluent percent of the population is responsible for around half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions," Letzte Generation said in a statement.
After a few hours of trouble, the airport resumed flight operations on its runways on Thursday evening local time but warned that there could still be delays, reported The Hill.
This is not the first time that Letzte Generation has adopted such method to protest. Two activists from the group last month threw mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting at the Museum Barberini in Germany in an effort to draw attention to the climate crisis.
