Five Chinese nationals have been killed in an explosion when their convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday.


The incident occurred when the Chinese convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber in northwest Pakistan's Shangla in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday.


Malakand's Deputy Inspector General of Police said that the attackers hit their explosive-filled car into the vehicle in which the Chinese nationals were travelling, according to ANI.


The Chinese nationals were reportedly engineers who were going to Dasu camp from Islamabad. The Chinese were working on the Dasu hydropower project.


The driver of the car has sustained injuries and admitted to a local hospital. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.


Bisham Station House Officer (SHO) Bakht Zahir said that the incident was a “suicide blast” and the authorities concerned were collecting the evidence, according to Dawn.


Security arrangements were tightened at the spot and the bodies were being shifted to a hospital, he further said.


"We will investigate from where and how the vehicle of a suicide bomber came and how it happened,” the SHO said.


Geo News quoted a senior police officer as saying that at least six Chinese, who were on the bus, were killed and added that several other passengers were injured in the suicide attack.


Shangla is close to Kohistan, where 13 people including nine Chinese were killed in a terrorist attack in 2021.Thousands of Chinese personnel are working in Pakistan on several projects being carried out under the aegis of the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. 


Earlier on Monday, armed Baloch militants tried to infiltrate one of the main naval air bases in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, but security forces foiled the attack and killed all four terrorists.


The attack took place in Turbat, a turbulent district in the sparsely populated province. Makran Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Umrani told the media that security forces had foiled an armed terrorist attack at the PNS Siddique Naval Air Base which is among the biggest naval air stations in the country.
