China's military flew 36 fighter planes and bombers close to Taiwan as part of a protracted campaign of intimidation against the self-governing island democracy that Beijing claims is a part of its territory, according to the Taiwanese defense ministry, news agency Associated Press (AP) reported.

Ten of the planes crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait, which separates the island from the mainland, on Saturday, according to the ministry. They reportedly featured four J-16 and six J-11 Shenyang aircraft.
