On Indians in Bangladesh, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian High Commission is assisting the Indian nationals in Bangladesh who want to return.


"The External Affairs Minister informed in a statement that there are 19,000 people in Bangladesh including 9000 students. The majority of them have come back. There are Indians who want to come back. Our High Commission is assisting them... The airlines are operating. Several people have reached out to our commission and high commission," he said.


"As far as the staff working in the Indian High Commissioners are concerned, our non-essential staff and their family members have come back... Other embassies have also pulled back their non-essential people. We hope normalcy returns soon," he added.

Officials staged protests at half a dozen banks, demanding cancellations of illegal appointments, punishment of bank owners involved in money laundering, and irregularities. They also demanded the return of jobs to those who faced termination in the past several years.


Today, the employees of different banks, including Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, United Commercial Bank, and Bangladesh Commerce Bank, demonstrated at their respective head offices, The Daily Star reported.

There have been reports of robbery in different areas of Dhaka from midnight on Wednesday until 3 am on Thursday, with armed robbers, mostly rag pickers, looting the residents at night, Dhaka Tribune reported.


Around 17 people were detained in the Pallabi area of Mirpur, while attempting to commit robbery. They were handed over to the army. Five people were detained in Mohammadpur area with weapons by local residents. A few people were also detained by local residents in the Uttara area.


Some residents from the area said that most of the robbers were rag-pickers and young men. The simultaneous robberies across the country have created widespread panic.

Son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sajib Wazed Joy said on Wednesday that building the new Bangladesh is not possible without the Awami League.


In a video message on his Facebook page, Joy said “Our activists are being attacked. Many were killed. In this situation, the Awami League is the oldest democratic party in Bangladesh. Awami League is not dead. Awami League made the country independent, it is not possible to end Awami League.”


In a 2-minute 36-second video message, Sajib Wazed Joy said that there is a chaotic situation in Bangladesh now. Vandalism and looting are happening all over the country.


He stated, “I said my family will not do politics again. However, we cannot give up in this situation as our leaders and activists are being attacked.”

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salahuddin Ahmed, who has been living in Meghalaya since 2015, on Wednesday claimed that widespread protests in his country were the result of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “misrule”.


Alleging that the Awami League government led by Hasina was responsible for his “disappearance” from Bangladesh nine years ago, he said he now hopes to return home.


Ahmed, who had served as the communications minister from 2001 to 2006 when the BNP was in power, earlier claimed he was abducted from Bangladesh and had no idea how he reached Shillong in May 2015.


"The mass movement was the result of misrule for three consecutive terms, flawed elections and absence of the rule of law. It was her (Hasina’s) fate,” the BNP leader claimed, as quoted by PTI. Hasina resigned as the Bangladesh Prime Minister on August 5 following massive anti-government protests.


"People of Bangladesh strongly believe that Sheikh Hasina was responsible for my disappearance from my country," Ahmed told a group of journalists in Shillong.

Bangladesh Crisis LIVE: BSF Thwarts Infiltration Attempt By Large Bangladeshi Group In West Bengal

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday said it thwarted a "significant" infiltration attempt by a large group of Bangladeshis along the International Border (IB) in West Bengal, amid an ongoing "high alert", announced due to a turmoil in the neighbouring country.


Officials said the personnel of the force stopped about 120-140 Bangladeshi citizens who were attempting to cross over to the Indian side from multiple locations in the eastern state, as reported by news agency PTI.


The force is on a "high alert" mode since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Dhaka earlier this week.


The North Bengal Frontier of the force issued a statement to quell "rumours" and clarify that there was "no widespread movement of the minority population from Bangladesh towards the Indian border."


"The individuals gathered were primarily motivated by fears of local unrest. The BSF, in coordination with the BGB, and Bangladeshi civil authorities has reassured these individuals of their safety and encouraged them to return to their homes," a spokesperson for the frontier headquartered in Kadamtala, Darjeeling, said, as quoted by PTI.


The Bangladeshi nationals were observed gathering near the IB around noon in two sectors, the statement said.

The United States Wednesday said it is ready to work with the interim government of Bangladesh as the country charts a democratic future for its people.


"We continue to monitor developments in Bangladesh, and we obviously have seen the appointment of Muhammad Yunus as the leader of an interim government," State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily news conference.


"We think the interim government will play a vital role in establishing long-term peace and political stability in Bangladesh," Miller said responding to questions on the fast-moving development in Bangladesh.


A State Department spokesperson, meanwhile, told PTI, "All decisions regarding the interim government should respect democratic principles, rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people." "We understand Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has agreed to lead Bangladesh's interim government. We stand ready to work with the interim government, as it charts a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh," the spokesperson said in response to a question.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been acquitted in a case over labour law violations and his prison sentence has been overturned. The verdict was delivered by the Labour Appellate Tribunal on Wednesday after hearing the appeals submitted by Yunus and three others against the previous ruling, Dhaka Tribune reported citing Yunus's lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun.


On January 1, Muhammad Yunus, who is set to become the head of the interim government, was sentenced by a Dhaka court along with three others to six months in jail over labour law violations.


He was facing more than 100 other charges over labour law violations and alleged graft.

Bangladesh Crisis LIVE: Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak Arrested At Airport

Junaid Ahmed Palak, Minister of State for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology of the outgoing government, has been arrested. He was arrested from the VIP lounge of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.


Palak went to the airport to go to the Indian capital, New Delhi, Dhaka Times reported, citing airport sources.  It is known that Palak was waiting at the VIP lounge of Shahjalal International Airport while trying to go to New Delhi. Airport staff then detained him in the VIP lounge. After a while, Air Force officials came and arrested him.


Due to the massive loss of lives across the country and the country being cut off for five consecutive days due to the quota reform movement, along with the government, State Minister Palak also came under severe criticism. In view of this, last Friday afternoon at his residence in Natore, Palak apologized to the nation in a discussion meeting on the occasion of National Mourning Day.


However, there was no trace of Palak ever since Sheikh Hasina fled India yesterday in the face of student uprising. He was finally arrested at the airport.


Meanwhile, angry students attacked Singhra's house in Natore, Palak last night. At the same time, there were allegations of looting.

Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said what is happening in Bangladesh can happen in the country though "everything may look normal on the surface". The former Union minister was speaking at the launch of academician Mujibur Rehman's book Shikwa-e-Hind: The Political Future of Indian Muslims.


"Everything may look normal in Kashmir. Everything may look normal here. We may be celebrating the victory, although of course some people believe that that victory or that success of 2024 was perhaps only marginal, perhaps a lot more needs to be done," he said, as quoted by news agency PTI. "The fact remains that under the surface there is something," he said.


"What's happening in Bangladesh can happen here... the spread in our country prevents things blowing up in the manner in which they've blown up in Bangladesh," he said. Bangladesh was rocked by waves of violent anti-government protests since mid-July, following which Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country.

As the violence rages in Bangladesh, several ministers in the Sheikh Hasina government have fled the country. Mohibul Hasan Chaudhary, who was the education minister in the Hasina government, and Mohammad Tajul Islam, the minister for local government, rural development, and cooperation, left the country via the airport route.


Former Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, Sports Minister Najmul Hasan Papon, and Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh also left the country through HSIA.

Nobel Laureate and  'banker to the poor' Muhammad Yunus, who will be the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, will return to his violence-hit homeland on Thursday. Yunus will then be sworn in as the head of the interim government. Yunus's name was finalised for the post on Tuesday after former PM Sheikh Hasina's ouster from Bangladesh.


Muhammad Yunus will land at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Yunus is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka at 2:10 PM (Dhaka time) on Thursday.


The interim government will take oath at 8 PM on Thursday. As many as 15 members will take oath with Yunus at the head, said Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman.


Bangladesh descended into chaos as Prime Minister Hasina surreptitiously resigned and fled the country in a military aircraft while the army stepped in to fill the power vacuum by announcing an interim government.

A day after being released from house arrest, former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, delivered a public speech after over 6.5 years as she addressed her party's rally at the capital's Naya Paltan via video link. During her first speech since she was set free after 2018, Zia said that "Bangladesh got independence from the fascist government" due to the "brave children who made the impossible possible."


"You have been praying for my health all this while. I am able to speak to you to due to the blessings of Allah. We have been able to get independence from this fascist government. I pay my obeisance to the brave ones who gave their lives," she said in the video message in Bangla.


Amid the violence, minorities are being attacked in the violence-hit country and Hindus are being allegedly attacked in several parts.  According to sources, Hindus are being attacked in the districts including Panchgarh, Dinajpur, Bogura, Rangpur, Sherpur Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, Mugra, Narail, West Jashore, Patuakhli, South-West Khulna, Central Narsingdi, Satkhira, Tangail, Feni Chittagong, North-West Lakkipur.


Despite the high death toll, there were signs of a return to normalcy on Tuesday, with police and army patrolling the streets, BDNews24.com news portal said and added that schools were reopened after a long period of closure due to protests against Hasina over a controversial job quota system.


The situation in Dhaka was largely calm on Tuesday after a day of unrest and a night of tension. Buses and other public transport were on the streets and traders were opening shops. Government vehicles were heading to offices. Many battery-run rickshaws plied the roads, it added.
