New Delhi: An Air India Newark (US)-Delhi flight (AI106) with around 300 passengers made an emergency landing at Sweden's Stockholm airport after it developed a technical snag, as reported by the news agency ANI on Wednesday. All passengers are safe. According to ANI, a large number of fire engines were deployed at the airport as the flight made an emergency landing. Earlier on Monday, an Air India flight from New York to Delhi (AI-102) was diverted to London due to a medical emergency onboard.
The flight was diverted to Stockholm on Wednesday due to an oil leak in one of the engines, according to a senior official, as reported by the news agency PTI. The senior DGCA official said the flight, operated with Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, had an oil leak in one of the engines.
Following the oil leak, the engine was shut down, and later the flight landed safely in Stockholm, the official added. During the ground inspection, oil was seen coming out from the drain mast of engine two, the official said, adding that the inspection is in progress, PTI reported.
Air India issued a statement over the incident and said that the flight landed safely at Stockholm airport. Passengers have been provided lounge access and meals. "Air India's flight AI 106 from Newark to Delhi faced a technical issue and was diverted to Stockholm early this morning with 284 pax and 8 infants on board. The flight landed safely at Stockholm airport. Passengers have been provided lounge access and meals," the statement read.
"The immigration procedure of the passengers is being carried out to ensure their stay at the city's hotels. Meanwhile, the aircraft is being thoroughly checked to address the technical issue," the statement further informed.
In another incident, passengers of a Mumbai-bound Air India flight and airline staff got into a heated argument at Delhi airport on Tuesday late at night after the flight was delayed by more than four hours, ANI reported.
Speaking to ANI, a passenger on board the Delhi-Mumbai flight said that flight AI-805 got delayed from its original schedule of 8:00 pm to 10:40 pm first then 11:35 pm then 12:30 am and then finally it took off at 1:48 am from Terminal 3 of the airport in Delhi.
He further said that the supervisors kept creating narratives of flights being delayed due to crew on the way and they actually were "fooling" customers. Another staff member told that it was due to the pilot, who was supposed to be on the plane getting sick at the last moment.
