New Delhi: At least three people were killed and 11 others wounded in a mass shooting in Philadelphia late Saturday night, police said.

Police Inspector D. F. Pace said that two men and a woman had been killed.

Two of the deceased include a 25-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man, New York Post reported.

The Police Inspector added that officers responding to the incident “observed several active shooters shooting into the crowd”, Agence France-Presse reported.

“You can imagine there were hundreds of individuals enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend, when this shooting broke out,” Agence France-Presse quoted Pace as saying.

The Police Inspector said that officers had fired at one of the shooters though it was unclear whether the person was hit.

Pace said that two handguns were recovered at the scene and added that police would have to wait until morning to review surveillance footage from the nearby businesses that were closed on Saturday night.

Describing the investigation as “fluid”, the Police Inspector further said that there were still “a lot of unanswered questions”.

The victims are being treated in various hospitals, including Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Meanwhile, an alert has been issued post the mass shooting in Philadelphia.

“*Alert* Emergency personnel are responding to a shooting incident in the area of 3rd and South Streets. Several people have been injured. Please avoid the area,” Philadelphia Police tweeted.

No arrests have been made so far with the police looking for surveillance footage to try to identify the shooters.
