World Oceans Day 2022: World Oceans Day is celebrated every year on June 8 to ponder upon the role and importance of the oceans. This day provides a platform to inspire action and sustainable use of marine resources available to our planet. World Oceans Day reminds us of the role oceans play in our everyday life. Oceans are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

Celebration for oceans and their conservation kick-started in 1992 globally following a conference by the United Nations (UN) on environment and development in Rio De Janeiro. However, in 2008 UN General Assembly decided that June 8 be officially recognised as World Oceans Day.

World Oceans Day 2022 Theme

This year the UN has planned an annual event on World Oceans Day coordinated by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs and supported by the nonprofit Oceanic Global will focus on the theme of "Revitalization: Collective action for the ocean”.

This year, the United Nations will host the first hybrid celebration of the annual event on June 8, 2022, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York to be broadcasted live.

As the ocean covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface making it the largest ecosystem on our planet hence its function as a life support system for all its inhabitants is vital in nature.

As per the Ocean Literacy portal, the focus of the UN's event on World Oceans Day will be safeguarding our ocean, its ecosystems and biodiversity and building climate change resiliency.
