Congress on Saturday released the first list of 13 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections starting later this month. The grand old party has fielded Nepal Mahato from Baghmundi, Manas Kumar Karmahapatra from Egra and Uttam Banerjee from Balarampur.

Congress will contest the elections in alliance with its long-time rival the Left. The party has showed confidence to defeat both, the ruling TMC led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a formidable BJP.


The announcement has come hours after Bharatiya Janata Party released a list of 57 names and the ruling Trinamool Congress released the complete list 232 candidates of for the Bengal elections. 


The state assembly election will be held for all 294 seats wherein the voting will take place in 1,01,916 polling stations all over West Bengal. Elections to the 294-member Assembly will be held in eight phases, from March 27 to April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2. The magic figure to be the ruling party in the West Bengal Assembly is 148.
