NEW DELHI: Pictures of a baby born with rare genetic condition has recently taken social media by storm and sent shock waves among people.

Images of the newly-born have gone viral on internet with many claiming in messages that an 'alien' has taken birth from woman's womb.

"The infant was born at Paliganj hospital in Bihar's capital Patna and even the parents are traumatised by the birth," the messages claimed.

What's the truth:

The child was born at a government hospital in Patna district on Saturday. Her parents are the residents of Azim Nagar under Paliganj block in the city.

The baby has a disease called harlequin ichthyosis, which is a severe genetic disorder that mainly affects the skin. Infants with this condition are born with widespread and persistent thick, dry, “fish-scale” skin.

"The infant was born with a congenital disorder Harlequin Ichthyosis. The overall incidence of is one in three lakh births and those born with this desease don't survive for long," Child specialist Dr. Ashish Gupta said.

In a similar case, a baby girl with a severe congenital disorder and near-total missing external body skin, was born at a city hospital in Nagpur last year and died after three days.
