What is the grand plan?
The 1200km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway highway is believed to reduce the time taken to travel between the national capital and the commercial capital by almost 12 hours. The highway will have 8-lanes and also the provision for four more in the future. With this, the expressway is set to become one of India’s longest expressways. The proposed project will also bring down the travel distance between the two metros by 125 km. At present, the distance between the two metropolitan cities, through NH8, is 1,450 km but after the completion of the expressway project, it will be reduced to approximately 1,250 km.
How it will benefit?
If everything goes as planned, the distance between the two metros would be covered in just 11-12 hours by road as per India Today report. It is one of the seven such express corridors being constructed and aimed towards cutting down logistical time and costs besides prepping up the demand for vehicles. Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, large areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan will be benefited due to the upcoming expressway.
In total, the government has proposed 22 such super-expressways or green express highways which are already in the works.
What’s the cost?
The Rs 82,514 crore project will have provisions for 75 rest ways and highway malls at 50km intervals on either side of the expressway. Apart from this, another aspect of the roadways project is that the government has managed to rake in around Rs 16,000 crore on the land acquisition front alone, as per the news agency PTI.
