The Tata Nexon is all set to become the most powerful diesel sub-4m SUV in the country with its new 1.5-litre Revotorq oil burner!

Tata Motors has dropped some intel for the first time about the production-spec version of its debutant sub-4m SUV, the Nexon. It has revealed the Nexon's powertrain options and announced that it will be launched around the upcoming festive season. According to Tata, the ‘Nexon’ is a short form of ‘NEXt-ON’.

A quick recap of the Tata Nexon!

The Nexon was revealed in concept form at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. Its near-production version was unveiled at the 2016 Expo (check out the picture above) and it was also showcased at the Geneva Motor Show this year. Now, Tata has revealed the first official sketch of the production-spec Nexon.

Design

Basic design philosophy: A coupe high-rider just like the Range Rover Evoque

Looking at the fuzzy sketch that Tata has shared, it seems like the production-spec version will be nearly identical to the one showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. It is good to see that its waistline ceramic belt, which is certainly its signature design element, made its way in the production-spec model. This particularly accentuates its dual-tone roof theme. The ‘U’ shaped daytime running LEDs are also carried over from the show car.

Engine and Transmission

The Nexon will be powered by brand new turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from Tata’s Revotron and Revotorq families, respectively. Both the engines will be mated to a brand new 6-speed manual gearbox.

1.5-litre Revotorq Diesel

  • Displacement: 1496cc (4-cylinder)

  • Power: 110PS @ 3,750rpm

  • Torque: 260Nm @ 1,500-2,750rpm

  • Transmission: 6-speed manual

  • Driving modes: Eco, City, and Sport

This new diesel not only makes the Nexon the most powerful sub-4m SUV in the market, but also the torquiest as well. Its torque figure puts it right in the league of the Hyundai Creta. Also, none of the ground-up-designed sub-4m SUVs offer a 6-speed manual transmission as of now.

1.2-litre Revotron Petrol

  • Displacement: 1198cc (3-cylinder)

  • Power: 110 PS @ 5,000rpm

  • Torque: 170Nm @ 2,000-4,000rpm

  • Transmission: 6-speed manual

  • Driving modes: Eco, City, and Sport

It is perhaps the turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre petrol that made its debut with the Tiago and the Tigor. The 1.2-litre turbo motor that pulls the Zest and the Bolt is a different engine and is a 4-cylinder unit as well. Also, with its turbocharged petrol, the Nexon becomes the only sub-4m SUV to solely offer turbocharged engines.
