Chennai: Nine persons, including four children, died after the dilapidated home they were staying in collapsed on Aziziya Street in Pernambut of Vellore district on Friday. Another five persons suffered injuries in the collapse and have been admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai. 


The incessant rains started lashing north Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring south Andhra Pradesh since a depression made landfall on Friday.


According to a report on Hindustan Times, Vellore Collector P Kumaravel Pandian said, the house was located near the banks of a river in Pernampet and it was already in a dilapidated condition so as more rains started lashing the district even the people of neighbouring homes moved to the dilapidated home. Following this, the 50-year-old house which was in a dangerous condition collapsed on Friday.

After the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased persons and Rs 50,000 to the persons who are receiving treatment in the Government Hospital. 


Further, the district also experienced flood-like situation on Friday after the district administration released 1,04,054 cusecs of water from Palar River, which was in spate. The water release inundated several places including Pallikonda, Anaicut and Gudiyatham. Thousand of people have been moved to relief camps. 


Meanwhile, another building near Palar Garden in Pallikonda near Gudiyatham washed away on Friday due to the spate, said a report on The Hindu. However, luckily there were no occupants of the building. 


In another incident, three persons were washed away due to the spate in Palar River, said a report on The New Indian Express.
