Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation is mulling over to disinfect around 80,000 stray dogs over a period of two-and-a-half-years.


According to the IANS report, Chennai Corporation is considering to vamp up its buildings and other facilities at Kannamapettai and Pulianthope to run 100 sterilizations per day in the TN capital. It would also revamp its facility at Lloyds colony.


The corporation has granted Rs 10 crore for the upgradation of the three shelters for stray dogs. According to veterinary officials, the authority has finalized designs and renovation work would begin in a month.

Besides, Chennai Corporation is the only civic body in the country that has a separate crematorium for stray dogs at Kannamapettai.


Revamping the facility


Currently, the existing structure for stray dogs is in the crumbling condition in Lloyds colony and only 550 sq m in area. The corpn is planning to demolish the dilapidated facility and set up a well-equipped facility with a pre-surgery room, post-operative room, surgery rooms with good ventilation, separate kennels for 100-150 dogs, trolleys to move the dogs and include pantry and spaces for the staff.


Close monitoring


DMK member and MLA and son of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin, and his wife Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi jointly will monitor the renovation work of the stray dog shelters which is expected to be in eight months.


GPS tracking for dogs


Besides, AA GPS tag will be attached to the stray dogs picked up from the streets and a photo of the stray would be uploaded. A microchip will also be implanted in the street dogs.
