New Delhi: Amid the growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday said that if a third world war happens, it will involve nuclear weapons and it will be disastrous, the RIA news agency reported as quoted by Reuters.

Russia, which launched a special military operation against Ukraine last week, would face a "real danger" if Kyiv acquired a nuclear weapon, said foreign minister Lavrov.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Nuclear Deterrence Force to be on alert. Even before the attack on Ukraine, Putin had threatened in his speech that if any country tried to interfere in the issue of Russia and Ukraine, it would lead to “consequences you have never seen.”

Russia attacked a residential building on Monday, then destroyed the hostel on Tuesday and today attacked many buildings including a maternity hospital. Russia is continuously firing missiles at Ukraine. There are 15 nuclear plants in Ukraine, if a single plant is attacked, there will be a catastrophe. Just a few days ago, when the Russian military took control of Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear plant, Ukraine had expressed the fear of devastation all over the world.

"Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated," President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote earlier on Twitter.

"This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe."

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also warned of the possibility of "another ecological disaster" at the site.
