New Delhi: The media head of Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Naveen Kumar has asked North Delhi Municipal Corporation to rename the Akbar road after the first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, reported PTI. CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 others had recently died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. 


In a letter written to the chairman of NDMC last week, Kumar urged that Akbar Road in Lutyens Delhi should be renamed after General Bipin Rawat Road. In a letter to the NDMC Chairman written in Hindi, Kumar said, “ You are requested to attach a permanent memory to country's first CDS Bipin Rawat, by renaming Akbar road after General Bipin Rawat which is a true homage to him by the council."


The NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay said that the civic body was “very keen” on having a road, falling under its jurisdiction, to be renamed after General Bipin Rawat. "Naming of a road under NDMC follows a procedure. We will discuss how to go about it and which road to name after General Rawat," Upadhyay said.

He added that the NDM has already received several requests in the past to rename a road in the memory of the first Chief of Defence Staff of the country.


The Akbar road originates from India Gate and runs till Teen Murti roundabout. Several landmarks like Congress Party’s headquarters are located along the stretch. 


There have been a few attempts in the past to rename Akbar Road. In October this year, members of an outfit defaced the Akbar Road sign board by scribbling ‘Samrat Hemu Vikramditya Marg’ on it.
