New Delhi: After bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha on Anant Chaturdashi, the 15-day Pitru Paksha or Shradh period begins. It begins on the Purnima Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada and concludes on the Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha, according to the Hindu calendar.

Hindus honour their ancestors' souls who have passed away during this time. Pitru Paksha is characterized by the Shradh rites and a constrained way of life.

It is believed that by providing food and performing Tarpan, the spirits of our departed ancestors find calm and shower their blessings on the family. These rites aid the ancestors in achieving moksha, or salvation.

The deceased's eldest son conducts the Shradh during Pitru Paksha by presenting offerings for ancestors who are believed to be in pitrulok, which is the realm between Heaven and earth.

Mahalaya, which ushers in Durga Puja, signals the conclusion of Pitru Paksha. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Durga arrived on earth. Mahalaya marks the beginning of the Devi Paksha.
