Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is in jail in a road cage case, might be released on January 26 as his name is on the list of prisoners to be released from jail on Jan 26. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann would take the final call on the issue.
The former Congress's Punjab unit chief was sent to Patiala Central Jail on May 20 after surrendering at a local court. The cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in a 1998 road rage case. A 65-year-old man, named Gurnam Singh, had died in the accident.
Earlier, the court had slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sidhu and also acquitted Sidhu's associate, Rupinder Singh Sandhu in the case. The Sessions Court Judge of Patiala on September 22, 1999, acquitted Sidhu and his associate, due to lack of evidence in the case and giving the benefit of the doubt.
