Kerala Records 24,296 Cases, Accounts To 65% Of Country's Daily Covid Caseload
The day also saw a high of 173 Covid-19 deaths taking the total death toll in the state due to the covid infection to 19,757.
Thiruvananthapuram: After a lull in daily testing, Kerala again saw daily Covid case numbers rise high, with 24,296 people testing positive for novel coronavirus. On Monday, the state tested 1,34,706 samples since epidemiologists warned of a possible increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Onam celebrations.
With the new numbers, the state leads the country in new daily cases, the number of active cases, and the number of daily Covid deaths. The daily test positivity rate has reached 18.04 per cent, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a statement. The state has recorded an increase in the positivity rate by 4%.
For the past three days, the daily positive cases had fallen since fewer tests were conducted.

The day's figures were released shortly after a high level meeting of Vijayan and others to assess the situation decided that existing Covid protocols would not be tinkered with now, and that the already announced Sunday total lockdown in the state will continue.
Vijayan's statement also said that 19,349 people turned negative, taking the total active cases to 1,59,335.

Earlier, the Kochi chapter of Indian Medical Association warned that even a single visit by a family could lead to the multiplication of novel coronavirus spread. They also advised people to stick to a small bubble and reduce social visits for Onam. Even last year, a spike in COVID-19 numbers was experienced immediately after Onam celebrations.
