At present, Veena is the managing director of an IT firm Exalogic solutions in Bengaluru which she started in 2015.

Meanwhile, Riyas joined a CPM student outfit SFI and later its youth outfit DYFI, and steadily became a prominent youth activist of the Left party in the state. As a state committee member of the CPM, he had contested the 2009 LS elections from Kozhikode but lost the seat to MK Raghavan of the Congress with a slim margin. Riyas is the son of retired IPS officer PM Abdul Khader and KM Ayishabi.

According to the news daily The Indian Express, it’s the second marriage of both the partners. The wedding was registered under the Special Marriage Act during a wedding function keeping in mind the Covid-19 restrictions. The function was held at the CM’s residence in the presence of friends and family. The function has less than 50 persons present for the ceremony.

As per reports, there was a controversy over the candidature of Riyas and Pinarayi Vijayan, but the then state secretary of CPM had refuted the claims saying it as "an opportunity given to youth and minorities".

It is the second marriage for the 43-year-old Riyas and Veena. While the political leader who was earlier married in 2002 has two children, Veena has a single child who got divorced in 2015, according to News18.com.
