Kerala Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer said that he was hunted down for saying that scientific temper should be promoted in society. He said that a massive campaign was organised against him for saying that science should be promoted. Thalassery MLA said that his intention was only to purely to promote science. While speaking at a programme in Kochi, the speaker asked, "If a political worker in Kerala cannot say that scientific temper should be promoted...where is that state heading?"

He said that the state needed a new renaissance movement since they were being attacked for speaking against anything. As a result, he said that promoting scientific temper was the only solution to address the problems facing the country, as per PTI.

Shamseer said that he was a political worker who was isolated and hunted down for saying science should be promoted. He reacted to the controversy "science vs myth" which led to protests from various quarters against him for his alleged remarks against Hindu deity Lord Ganesha.

On July 21, the Speaker criticised the Centre for promoting Hindu myths as scientific achievements from ancient times, reported Mathrubhumi. He quoted an example where Lord Ganesha was mentioned as the first person on whom plastic surgery was performed in the country.

Following this, BJP and other organisations, including as the VHP, launched a campaign against Shamseer, claiming that the statement made by him about Lord Ganesha and the fabled 'pushpaka vimanam' on July 21 had offended them.

However, the ruling CPI(M) has sharply denounced the Sangh Parivar's campaign against Shamseer. Earlier, CPI(M) said that misinterpreting myths and beliefs and portraying them as scientific ideas will only lead to a reversal of society's progress and halt the advancement of science.
