Witnessing a surge in daily covid-19 cases, the administration of Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday announced to impose weekend-lockdown in the Union Territory. According to a statement from the Office of LG, the curfew will remain effective from 8 pm tonight till 6 am on April 26 (Monday). 


"Complete corona curfew to be observed in the Union Territory from 8 pm tonight till 6 am on April 26 (Monday). Essential and emergency services to be allowed. All market, commercial institutions will remain closed," the official statement said.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir administration in a notice issued on April 8, ordered imposition of night curfew from 10 pm to 6 am in the urban areas of eight districts which was later extended to municipal and urban local body limits of all the 20 districts in the Union Territory on April 20.


Meanwhile, All schools in Jammu and Kashmir shall continue to remain closed for imparting on-campus/in-person education to the students till May 15, except for courses/programs that require physical presence of the students on account of laboratory/research/thesis work and internship etc.


The strict measures in the Union Territory have come at the time when the total number of COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir surged to 1,56,344 on Friday. As per the official data, 1,937 fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported in last 24 hours while 19 more people succumbed to the deadly disease, taking the death toll to 2,111.
