Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is serving life imprisonment in Jodhpur Central Jail after convicted in a rape case, has been admitted to a hospital after he complained of restlessness, discomfort in knees and other ailments. As per the news agency ANI, he has been taken to the hospital after complaining about health issues. He was convicted by a Jodhpur court in a case of sexual assault in 2018. The Jodhpur Court has awarded him life imprisonment till death after holding him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor in 2013. Judge Madhusudan Sharma also held 2 others, namely Shilpi and Sharad guilty in the case. The two have been given 20 years each in jail. All the three convicts fined Rs 1 lakh each. Two of his aides Prakash and Shiva were acquitted.
Meanwhile, in January the jailed self-style godman approached a trial court in Gujarat seeking a 30-day temporary bail to attend to his ailing wife, as per PTI report. The temporary bail plea has been filed before the court of Additional Sessions Judge S N Solanki in Gandhinagar. The 79-year-old godman has been undergoing jail term since 2013, is also facing trial in a rape case before the sessions court in the Gujarat capital. In this case Surat-based sisters, who lived in Asarams ashram in Motera area of Ahmedabad between 1997 and 2006, had filed separate complaints against him and his son Narayan Sai in which both are accused of rape and illegal confinement, among other charges.
