Indian Navy Rescues 36 Indian Fishermen Stranded In Bay Of Bengal For Over 2 Days

The fishermen were stranded at sea for over two days due to rough weather conditions, without fuel, provisions and engine breakdown, the Indian Navy said.

The Indian Navy on Saturday said it rescued around 36 fishermen stranded in the Bay of Bengal for two days. In a tweet, the Indian Navy said Indian Naval Ship (INS) Khanjar rescued the fishermen, who got stranded due to rough weather conditions.

"Indian Naval Ship Khanjar, mission deployed in the Bay of Bengal, has safely brought back 36 Indian fishermen who were stranded 130 nautical miles from the Tamil Nadu coast. The fishermen were onboard three fishing vessels, which were towed by INS Khanjar for more than 30 hours in challenging sea conditions," Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal told PTI.

INS Khanjar, which was on operational deployment in the Bay of Bengal, detected three fishing vessels- Sabarainathan, Kalaivani and V Sami. All three vehicles were around 130 nm away from the Tamil Nadu coast.

Madhwal said, "The vessels with 36 fishermen onboard were from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. They had been stranded at sea for over two days due to rough weather conditions, without fuel, provisions and engine breakdown."

The Navy spokesperson said the ship supplied the fishing vessels with the necessary provisions and towed them for more than 30 hours. The fishermen were brought to the Chennai harbour on Friday.

Indian Coast Guard Rescues Fishermen In Andamans

Meanwhile, Indian Coast Guard boat C-145, which was on patrol off Table Island in the Andamans, rescued three stranded fishermen on Friday. The patrol boat rescued the distressed fishermen from the sinking MV P Gauri and provided them with medical aid. After they got medical aid, the boat then ferried them to Diglipur harbour, reported news agency ANI.
