New Delhi: World population day is observed every year on July 11 to create awareness among the people regarding population-related issues. The day was established in the year 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme. This day aims to create awareness among people about family planning, maternal health, poverty, and parenting rights. The world population increases annually by 100 million approximately every 14 months. In 2011, the world population reached a population of 7 million and it stands at 8 billion in 2022. It took thousands of years for the population to grow to 1 billion and then it took just 200 years to grow sevenfold.

World Population Day 2022  — History

The world’s population crossed the five billion mark on July 11, 1987, and this day was first observed 2 years later in 1989. The World Population Day was suggested by the Senior Demographer at World Bank, Dr. K.C. Zachariah in 1987. Then by resolution 45/216 of December of 1990, the UN General Assembly decided to continue observing World Population Day on July 11. A number of UNFPA country offices and other organizations commemorate the day in partnership with governments to focus attention on the importance of population issues.

World Population Day 2022  — Significance

World population day is celebrated every year on July 11 to create awareness among the people about the harmful effects of overly populating a world. This day helps people to realize how fast the population rate is growing around the globe. It also helps to create awareness among the people about issues like family planning, gender quality and maternal health issues, and poverty.

India is one of the populated countries which needs to pay more attention to the rapidly increasing population growth and should make people aware of terms such as family planning, and maternal health.
