Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh breathed his last at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) after a prolonged illness on Saturday.
He was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) earlier on July 4 due to an infection and reduced consciousness level.
He died due to sepsis and multi-organ failure, the hospital said in a statement.
Before being shifted to the PGI, 89-year-old Singh was undergoing treatment at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.
He became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1991.
Singh, however, had to resign as the chief minister following the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, during his tenure.
Singh, who was the face of Hindutva in Uttar Pradesh, became the chief minister for the second time between 1997-99.
Singh, who left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1999, re-joined the saffron party in 2004.
He was elected the BJP MP from Bulandshahr in 2004. Singh later in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls became an independent MP from Etah.
Singh joined the Samajwadi Party in 2009. He formed his own party, the Jan Kranti Party, in 2010.
He re-joined the BJP for the second time in March 2014.
Singh was appointed the Governor of Rajasthan on August 26, 2014.
