The court had finished hearing on the matter on May18. The matter was heard by a 5-judge bench for 6 days. The Supreme Court during the hearing focused on two main points:
- Is Triple Talaq a fundamental part of Islam?
- Will Islam’s core move without Triple Talaq?
The court is set to give an answer to these questions in its much awaited judgment today.
What after Triple Talaq is banned?
As per a statement issued by Government in front of the court, it would bring a law in Parliament to codify Triple Talaq and decide upon its rules. This would also open court’s doors for Muslim women in the matter of divorce.
Hundreds of Muslim women today are a victim of Triple Talaq and are facing massive problems to make the ends meet after sudden divorce by their husbands over WhatsApp, telephone and letters.
One such village is situation in Khargaon in Madhya Pradesh, where over 50 women are victims of Triple Talaq, where most of them are between 20-30 years of age.
Where on one hand women are hoping for a ban on the age old practice, the men on the other hand are hoping that the court does not interfere in Muslim Personal Law and doesn’t put any ban on the same.
All eyes now lay on the SC verdict which is set to come out at 10:30am.
