West Bengal: Sukanta Majumdar Replaces Dilip Ghosh As State BJP Chief, Latter Made National Vice-President

Babul Supriyo who was the latest to ditch the saffron party for ruling Trinamool said that BJP state president Dilip Ghosh was partly responsible for the assembly poll debacle of the party.

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced the appointment of Dr. Sukanta Majumdar as its West Bengal unit chief. He replaces senior leader Dilip Ghosh amid speculation over the former state party chief's role after the loss in West Bengal election.

Dr Sukanta Majumdar has been appointed as the West Bengal BJP chief. Meanwhile, his predecessor Dilip Ghosh has been made the national vice president of the party, news agency ANI reported.

Dilip Ghosh took to Twitter to congratulate Majumdar. "Congratulations to Dr. Sukant Majumdar as the new (West Bengal state) President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Wish him success," he wrote in Bengali.

Expressing gratitude towards the BJP high command, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said that the party will protect West Bengal from "Talibani rule of Mamata Banerjee".

"They've given such a huge responsibility to a small worker like me. Thankful to party chief JP Nadda, PM Narendra Modi, and others. BJP had fought earlier to save West Bengal and stop its Talibanisation, we'll do so in the future too. We'll protect it from Talibani rule of Mamata Banerjee," the new Bengal BJP chief said.

The decision to appoint a new West Bengal president can be seen as BJP trying to revamp the party in the state amid desertions by a number of its leaders who have switched over to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The desertions follow as the saffron party failed to register the massive victory it hoped to get in the TMC-ruled state in the recently held election. 

Asansol MP Babul Supriyo who was the latest to ditch the saffron party for ruling Trinamool said that BJP state president Dilip Ghosh was partly responsible for the assembly poll debacle of the party.

"His comments during the poll campaign were not in sync with the culture of Vidyasagar, Rabindranath Tagore, and Satyajit Ray, and incongruous with the ethos of Bengalis. It had contributed to the decline of the party in Bengali psyche," he said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the party has also announced the appointment of former Uttarakhand governor Baby Rani Maurya as its vice president.

Maurya is a Dalit leader and is expected to play a pertinent role in the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly election as UP happens to be her native state.
