Kolkata: Bollywood veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty is all set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly polls. Sources told ABP News that Mithun Chakraborty will be joining the saffron party during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Kolkata’s Brigade Ground on Sunday.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had last month met Mithun Chakraborty, who is a former Rajya Sabha MP. The meeting had set rumour mills agog that the actor may join the BJP, which is making desperate bid to trounce the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal electoral battle.

The actor was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by West Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in 2014. Mithun Chakraborty, however, resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on December 26, 2016.

Voting for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases beginning March 27 and ending on April 29. The results will be declared on May 2.
