West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ananta Maharaj, also known as Nagen Roy, at his residence in Cooch Behar on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting, seen as politically significant, lasted for around 35 minutes. Upon her arrival at the Chakchaka Palace, Nagen Roy welcomed CM Mamata Banerjee with a traditional scarf and 'guwa paan' (betel leaf).
Before visiting Roy’s residence, the West Bengal Chief Minister offered prayers at the Madan Mohan temple in the district headquarters town, news agency PTI reported.
A video of the meeting was shared by news agency ANI.
Banerjee’s visit to Cooch Behar follows her trip to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri, where she met with victims of the Kanchanjunga Express tragedy. She arrived in Cooch Behar on Monday evening.
While the state BJP has yet to respond to this development. Roy was cryptic about the implications of the meeting. "Let's see what happens in future," he told reporters afterwards, as quoted by PTI.
