New Delhi: After rainfall and snowfall in parts of North India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that for the next 5-6 days cold wave in North West India is an “unlikely" phenomenon. 


"Due to fresh western disturbance,there will be light to moderate snowfall in the western Himalayan region. Because of this, there will be 2-3°C rise in temperature in 48 hours in North-west India. For next 5-6 days, there is unlikely any coldwave," an IMD Scientist Dr. Naresh told the news agency ANI.






IMD said that various parts of north India witnessed snowfall and rain as a result of western disturbances. The weather department added that the western disturbances seem to be moved away for now.











"Two days back, there was one active western disturbance which has caused rainfall and snowfall at most places over the Himalayan regions. Even we reported 50 to 60 cm of snowfall. Even the plains of Northwest India Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh also experienced rainfall activity, and even NCR also experienced rainfall activity. Now we expect that the western disturbance has moved away," IMD Scientist Naresh further stated.


The Meteorological Department said that after heavy rains in many parts of North India on Sunday, the mercury in Delhi-NCR has dropped by two to three degrees Celsius. The temperature in the national capital was 9.9 degrees Celsius during the morning. IMD forecasted strong winds during the daytime. 


Explaining the weather phenomena, IMD Scientists said that as the north-westerly winds prevail at lower levels, the temperatures in Northwest India which are prevailing around 10 degrees will most likely fall by one to two degrees. Thereafter, a fresh western disturbance will cause light snowfall over the high reaches of the Himalayas, but in Northwest India temperatures will rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius after 48 hours.


Talking about the temperature, Naresh said that in the coming days, the minimum temperature is expected to reach 10 degrees while the maximum would be 20.


On Monday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was 18.9 degrees Celsius. The national capital received a wet spell on Sunday night resulting in a dip in temperature.
