New Delhi: In what can be termed as the deadliest road mishap of the city, a speeding Fortuner car mowed down several people and vehicles at New Delhi’s Meera Bagh area, killing a minor girl on the spot. The accident took place at Meera Bagh traffic signal late in the evening on Wednesday when the minor girl and several other pedestrians were sped over by the SUV.


The accused who is a retired professor of Delhi University’s Hansraj College, is currently admitted in the hospital.

A CCTV video of the speeding car has surfaced in which it can be seen that the car running at very high-speed rams into several pedestrians and vehicles on the street. The Fortuner hit a cycle, a scooter, a motorcycle, a rickshaw and then a mini-bus before it came to a halt, police added. According to police, the girl, a pedestrian, died on the spot following the collision of vehicles and eight others, including the SUV driver, were injured.

Police identified the driver as Kamal Kumar, a professor retired from Hansraj College of the Delhi University. As per the information received, Kamal who also got injured, was not drunk while he was driving and apparently lost control over the wheel. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The SUV was badly damaged due to impact.

Police said they are checking the CCTV cameras installed in the area to understand what exactly happened.

They said they will question Kumar after he recuperates.
