New Delhi: Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a surprise visit to Sola Ana Masjid in Bhabanipur region on Monday to seek blessings ahead of the September 30 bypolls.
According to media reports, visit to the mosque was not in her schedule for today but she decided to make a surprise visit there.
Several videos are making rounds on social media showing CM Mamata siting on a chair at the mosque with her head covered inside the Sola Ana Masjid in Bhabanipur and talking to maulvis of the mosque.
Mamata's sudden visit to the mosque has taken place few days ahead of by-elections which are to be held on 30 September in three assembly seats of West Bengal including Bhabanipur. Voting will be held in Bhabanipur on 30 September and the result will be declared on 3 October. CPM has fielded lawyer Shreejib Biswas from this seat, while Congress is not participating in the by-election.
Amit Malviya, the national in-charge of BJP's IT department, targeted Mamata Banerjee for reaching the mosque. He tweeted, "This visit to Sola Aana Masjid is not a 'sudden' but a planned visit to seek votes from Ward 77. In the next few days, she will go from booth to booth.”
Mamata is the TMC candidate from Bhabanipur while Priyanka Tibrewal is in the fray from BJP. Tibrewal is a lawyer who filed nomination at the Survey Bhawan in Alipore. She was accompanied by other senior leaders of the party including Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shubendu Adhikari and BJP MP Arjun Singh.
