New Delhi: M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, on Sunday informed that he has tested positive for coronavirus. The Vice President, who is now in Hyderabad, has advised anybody who comes into contact with him to isolate themselves and get tested.

Taking to Twitter, the Vice President of India's Office writes, "The Vice President, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu, who is in Hyderabad, tested COVID positive today. He has decided to remain in self-isolation for a week. He has advised all those who came in contact with him to isolate themselves and get tested."

This comes as several political leaders such as Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, BJP president JP Nadda, Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda,  Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge and several others tested positive for Coronavirus.

Amid the third wave of COVID infections, the country recorded 3,33,533 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, bringing the total active caseload to 21,87,205, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

Omicron In Community Transmission Stage In India

Meanwhile, according to studies, the Omicron variant is in the community transmission stage in India, and it has also become prevalent in various metropolises, where new cases are increasing quickly.

According to the PTI report, the bulletin said: “Omicron is now in community transmission in India and has become dominant in multiple sectors, where new cases have been rising exponentially. BA.2 lineage is in a substantial fraction in India and S gene dropout based screening is thus likely to give high false negatives.”

Quoting the INSACOG, the PTI report said that the recently reported B.1.640.2 lineage is being monitored. The INSACOG added that there is no evidence of rapid spread. While it has features of immune escape, it is currently not a variant of concern, the INSACOG said. So far, no case of the B.1.640.2 lineage has been detected in India.
