Vehicle Registrations: Govt Proposes Tweaks To Bharat Series Rules — Check Details

The MoRTH informed about the changes in the rules governing the BH series registration mark which was launched to ease services for people in transferable jobs

New Delhi: With an aim to widen the scope of the Bharat Series (BH) ecosystem, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed to allow the conversion of regular vehicle registrations into Bharat Series (BH) numbers.

As of now, only new vehicles can opt for the BH series mark. In a notification, the MoRTH informed about the changes in the rules governing the BH series registration mark which was launched to ease services for people in transferable jobs.

The government introduced the Bharat series number plates on 28 August last year. The ministry started vehicle registration in September 2021 under the newly launched BH-series number plates for non-transport vehicles.

A vehicle bearing this registration mark shall not require the assignment of a new registration mark when the owner of the vehicle shifts from one state to another, according to the ministry.

What are the proposed changes in BH series registration?

Transfer of vehicles with BH series to others

The government also allowed the transfer of vehicles with BH series registration mark to other persons, who are eligible or ineligible for BH series, according to the notification. "Vehicles currently having regular registration mark can also be converted to BH series registration mark subject to payment of requisite tax, to facilitate persons who subsequently become eligible for BH series registration mark," it said.

Change in application rule: The ministry has also proposed the amendment in rule 48 to provide flexibility to submit application for BH series either at the place of residence or place of work with a view to providing further ease of life to citizens.

Submission of certificate: It also said that the Working Certificate to be submitted by private sector employees has been further strengthened to prevent misuse.

In order to ensure seamless transfer of personal vehicles across states, last year in September, the road transport ministry created a new registration mark for new vehicles - Bharat Series (BH series).

In its previous notification, the ministry implemented a new vehicle registration regime that will free vehicle owners from re-registration process when they shift from one state/union territory to another.

"This vehicle registration facility under 'Bharat series (BH series)' will be available on voluntary basis to defense personnel, employees of central government/ state government/ central/ state public sector undertakings and private sector companies/organisations, which have their offices in four or more states/union territories," MoRTH had said.

So far, 24 states and UTs have rolled out the new Bharat Series (BH-series) for vehicle registration and so far over 20,000 vehicles have been registered across the states.
