NEW DELHI: Ahead of the election in Rajasthan, the government led by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced that they will soon begin to distribute mobile phones to women who fall under the Below Poverty Line (BPL).

According to the scheme, the phone will be distributed to around 1 crore cardholders of the Bhamashah Yojana. Under the scheme, Bhamashah cardholders will get 500 rupees to buy a mobile phone in the first instalment and will again get 500 rupees in the second instalment to recharge the phone.

The state government will also provide free Wifi facilities to as many as 5,000 gram panchayats to ensure that the state is well connected with the outside world.

The programme, which began on September 1, will conclude on September 30. Government plans to deliver information about schemes through these phones.

Earlier on Aug 29, Raje reportedly launched the Bhamashah Wallet mobile to bring in a digital mode of payments.

In Rajasthan, the state assembly's term ends on January 20, 2019.
