New Delhi: A day after DMK Chief M Karunanidhi’s demise, several party leaders on Wednesday approached Rajya Sabha Chairman M.Venkaiah Naidu and requested for postponement of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman election which is scheduled to take place on August 9.


Leaders of BSP, TDP, and TMC have approached Chairman stating that Karunanidhi’s last rites are being performed and many members are away over the same.

As per sources, the postponement of election is however not very likely.

The entire state of Tamil Nadu is grieved over DMK president’s demise and 7-day mourning has been declared in the state.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman election:

The election for the deputy chairman for the upper house of the parliament was set to take place on August 9.

The post of the Deputy Chairman has been lying vacant since June this year following the retirement of P J Kurien, who was elected to the Upper House of Parliament on a Congress ticket from Kerala.

Karunanidhi passes away:

After a prolonged illness DMK president breathed his last on Tuesday evening. The last of the lat leader is set to take place on Wednesday.
