MUZAFFARNAGAR: In a shocking incident, a youth was pulled out of a police van and beaten to death by angry locals in the presence of cops, who became mere spectators in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district. The video of this incident has gone viral on social media. The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Rajender. Two policemen have been suspended for negligence of duty.

According to reports, Rajender, who was drunk, got into an argument with a group of villagers and was assaulted by them. Later, the Police reached the spot and put Kashyap in the Dial 100 van. However, the angry locals dragged Rajender out and beat him to death.

One of the accused has been arrested and the police have registered cases against six persons under sections 147, 148, 149 and 302 of IPC.

Security has been tightened in the village and additional personnel have been deployed to ease tension, police said. Meanwhile, irate locals blocked the Thana Bhawan Road and kept Rajender's body in the open, demanding justice. Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The Opposition has been targetting the Yogi Adityanath government over the "deteriorating" law and order situation in the state.

“In present day Uttar Pradesh, there is no law and order, just an atmosphere of panic. The perpetrators have become so confident that they have murdered someone in prison. These are the government’s failures. The people of the state are very scared; the state has never seen such misrule and chaos before,” former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and SP president Akhilesh Yadav had earlier said.
