A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader is accused of blocking a road with his unattended car, killing a man who was being transported to a hospital in an ambulance. The incident occurred in the Uttar Pradesh district of Sitapur. When confronted about his negligent act, BJP leader Umesh Mishra allegedly threatened the patient's family with dire consequences, news agency IANS reported on Tuesday.
Bystanders captured a video of Umesh Mishra, who claimed to be the brother of BJP leader and Block Chief Ram Kinkar Pandey, abusing the deceased man's brother-in-law. He's also heard threatening to frame him in police cases.
He claimed that the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police were acting on his orders and that he would 'finish him'.
A few police officers were also seen standing quietly while Umesh Mishra yelled at the deceased man's relatives, but no one intervened. He then drove away from the scene in his car.
The video has gone viral on social media, drawing harsh criticism from the public for the police's alleged inaction. According to IANS, the officials from the district refused to comment on the incident.
In response to the video, the official Twitter account of Sitapur Police said: "In the referred incident dated 01.04.23, based on the information/tahrir given by the plaintiff at Police Station Kotwali Nagar today, charges have been registered under appropriate sections, advance investigation and proceedings are in progress under close supervision of the jurisdictional Nagar."
According to reports, Suresh Chandra, the patient, complained of chest pain on Saturday and was immediately referred to a Lucknow hospital. The patient and his family had just left the district hospital, where doctors had told them he was suffering from a heart attack. They were forced to come to a halt because Umesh Mishra had left his WagonR car parked on the road.
Suresh Chandra died inside the ambulance, writhing in pain after the ambulance could not move for more than 30 minutes. When confronted, the BJP leader became enraged and began hurling expletives.
