Kharar (Punjab) [India], February 20 (ANI): Manohar Singh, brother of Congress' chief ministerial candidate for Punjab Assembly polls, Charanjit Singh Channi, on Sunday said that as per the survey conducted by Congress, he could have won the election from Bassi Pathana constituency, yet he was ignored and was not given a ticket by the party.
Singh is now contesting election from the same seat as an independent candidate.
"I was working in the constituency. Even as per their (Congress) survey I can win the election. Still, I was ignored by High Command. I had to contest as people told me to. I hope I am able to meet the expectations of the people," Singh said. Expressing confidence in his brother Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Singh said, "Congress made a good decision (Channi as CM face)." "People have accepted this decision, the party will be benefitted by work done by my brother and they'll form the government," he added.
Punjab is witnessing a multi-corner contest this time with Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance and the coalition of Bharatiya Janata Party-former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress party as key players. An average voter turnout of 63.44 per cent was recorded in Punjab till 5 pm on Sunday.
In Punjab, the highest voter turnout was in the Mansa constituency with 73.45 per cent, followed by Malerkotla (72.84 per cent) and Sari Muktsar Sahib (72.01 per cent), according to the Election Commission of India. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. In the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, Congress won 77 seats in the 117-member House whereas Shiromani Akali Dal could win only 18 seats. On the other hand, AAP emerged as the second-largest party with 20 seats. (ANI)

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader SP Singh Baghe, who is contesting against Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal seat in Mainpuri, said that the myth of Mainpuri being a 'Yadavland' will break during the assembly polls in the state.
He was in Mainpuri offering prayers at a temple amid the third phase of elections in the state. "The myth of Mainpuri being a 'Yadavland' will definitely break," said Baghel to ANI. Baghel said that referring to Mainpuri as a 'Yadavland' is disrespectful towards communities of Brahmins, Rathores, Darji (tailor), Sunnar (goldsmith), Diwakars etc. With a strong Yadav population, Karhal has for three decades been an SP fortress.

As the third phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh is underway, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati urged the people to vote out the ruling party for giving false promises of providing them employment. In a series of Tweets, BSP chief said that to get rid of all kinds of false promises of the BJP, it is necessary that the ruling party should be changed. In another tweet, she said, "ruling party's wrong policies which made the poor people more poorer, should not be trusted anymore and that BSP should be trusted."
Mayawati added, "the biggest failure of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is not being able to provide employment to the people. In fact, the employment opportunities that were there were also snatched away from the people" She added, "the biggest responsibility of the government in current time is to give livelihood opportunities to the people."

In a video message shared on Twitter, Kejriwal asked people to vote for good schools, good government hospitals and for the security of the country. "

A lot of people are calling up including those from foreign countries and are cheering up for my support. Many of them have assured me to vote for me today. If people think that Sonu Sood is a star, then it's an icing on the cake for me," Malvika said.

59 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh and 117 in Punjab will go to the polls on Sunday, with the two states witnessing multi-cornered contests. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in power in Uttar Pradesh, while Punjab is being ruled by Congress.
In Uttar Pradesh, elections are being held in seven phases, the third of which will be held on Sunday.
Polling in Punjab will be held from 8 am to 6 pm. In Uttar Pradesh, the polling will take place between 7 am and 6 pm, according to the election authorities. The counting will take place on March 10.
Campaigning for the Sunday polls had ended on Friday, with senior leaders of the parties making a final effort to woo voters.
In UP, voting will be held for 59 Assembly constituencies spread across 16 districts. As many as 627 candidates are in the fray in this phase, in which over 2.15 crore people are eligible to vote.

The Karhal assembly seat, from where Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is contesting, will also go to the polls in the third phase on Sunday.
In Punjab, over 2.14 crore voters will decide the fate of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women.
