The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the renaming of 'Mundera Baazar' to 'Chauri Chaura' in Gorakhpur district and Deoria district's 'Telia Afghan' village to 'Telia Shukla' village, reported news agency ANI.

The MHA nod comes after the Uttar Pradesh government sent its recommendation on the same on October 6. The MHA sent a 'no-objection' certificate to the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday, allowing the changes.

The MHA reviews proposals from states for renaming particular places according to the existing guidelines and in consultation with the agencies concerned before approving the requests. The no-objection certificate can be provided only if the Ministry of Railways, Department of Posts and Survey of India also approve the proposal. These organisations need to confirm that there is no city, town or village in their records with a name similar to the proposed change.

The name of a village or town or city can be changed only by an executive order whereas a state can be renamed after the Constitution is amended with a simple majority in Parliament.

Earlier this year, the Dandupur and Naugarh railway stations in Uttar Pradesh were renamed to Maa Barahi Devi Dham and Siddharthanagar railway stations respectively. The Chauk Chauraha in Lucknow was renamed to Lalji Tandon Chauraha and the Ekana cricket stadium was renamed to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium.
