As per reports, Ram Vilas Paswan passed away at a hospital in New Delhi this evening. He had undergone a heart surgery on Saturday.
Soon after the news of Paswan's death came to light, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and condoled the demise of one of India's noted Dalit leader, who was also the party of his cabinet.
In a series of tweets, PM Modi wrote: "I am saddened beyond words. There is a void in our nation that will perhaps never be filled. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan Ji’s demise is a personal loss. I have lost a friend, valued colleague and someone who was extremely passionate to ensure every poor person leads a life of dignity."
PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minster Rajnath Singh had called up Chirag Paswan to enquire about his father's health on Saturday.
Ram Vilas Paswan was hospitalised from past few weeks and underwent a surgery at a private hospital in the national capital. He had been suffering from a heat condition for a long time.
With a rich political experience of over 5 decades, Ram Vilas Paswan was in PM Modi's Union Cabinet ever since he came to power in 2014. Currently, he was holding the portfolio of Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
