New Delhi: Slamming the Central government over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the UCC is being widely talked about since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has nothing to say on demonetisation and withdrawal of Rs 2000 currency notes from circulation, news agency PTI reported.
The debate over a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens in the country was revived after the Law Commission recently sought opinions from the public and intellectuals on the matter.
The discourse gathered momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently pushed for its implementation and accused the Opposition of instigating Muslims over the sensitive issue.
“If BJP read Rabindranath Tagore, then maybe they will not talk about Uniform Civil Code. UCC is being talked about only because the BJP government has not worked on the ground level,” a report by Times of India quoted the SP chief as saying.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Saturday said they will stick to their stand on UCC.
“On June 15 we issued a statement, but there is no change in stand on UCC. When there's a draft and a discussion we will participate and examine what is proposed. As of now, all we have is law commission public notice for responses. The Congress reiterates the statement as nothing new has happened,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said after a parliamentary strategy group meeting where they discussed various issues to be raised during the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning July 20.
The Congress noted that UCC is undesirable at this stage and said that the party will comment further if a draft bill or a report on the issue comes up.
Notably, the grand old party had alleged the Law Commission's latest attempt to seek fresh public opinion on UCC represents the Narendra Modi government's desperation for continuing with its agenda of polarisation and diversion from its failures.
