A four-year-old girl has been mauled to death by a leopard after she was taken from her home in Jammu & Kashmir’s Udhampur district. The girl's body was discovered by locals about 2 kilometres in Upper Bhanjala village of Panchari tehsil in the district, Rakesh Sharma, Range Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Department in Udhampur told the news agency ANI. The incident occurred between 7-8 PM on Saturday. The deceased child was identified as Tanu.

Sharma said that soon after they received the information about the missing child, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the state’s Wildlife Department rushed to the spot. The search was already on for the missing child when they reached the spot.

"After getting information about the leopard taking away a small girl, our teams launched a search operation but unfortunately we found her dead," Sharma said.

The officer further said that a massive search operation was launched to catch the leopard and that they prepared a file for compensation for the victim’s family.

"We launched a massive search operation to catch the wild leopard and soon we will capture it. We have prepared the file of compensation for the victim's family. Proper compensation should be given to them as soon as possible," he said.

He further advised people not to go out alone during dusk and dawn as there are higher chances of these wild animals lurking.

"During our awareness campaigns, we do request people that during dawn and dusk, don’t let children, women and senior citizens go alone", he was quoted by ANI.
