New Delhi: Two female journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, arrested over their reportage on the communal incidents in Tripura, have been granted bail by a Tripura court in Gomati district, ANI reported.
Journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha were arrested on Monday after their names appeared in the FIR at Fatikroy Police Station in Tripura on Sunday on the basis of a complaint filed by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) supporter. The FIR alleged that the reportage by the two journalists had maligned the image of the Tripura government.
Advocate Pijush Biswas said that the bail to the two female journalists has been granted on a bail bond worth Rs 75,000 each. The court has further asked them to appear before Kakraban Police Station where the case was registered. After questioning, they will be released.
The detainment of the two journalists happened after the Union Home Ministry on Saturday stated that the news circulating on social media about damage and vandalisation of a mosque in Tripura is fake and a complete misrepresentation of facts.
In a strongly-worded statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated: “There have been news reports that have been circulating that a mosque in Kakraban area of Gomati district in Tripura has been damaged and vandalised. These news reports are fake and are a complete misrepresentation of facts”.
