Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of organising campaign rallies in violation of the recent orders of the Election Commissions amid surging cases. He has urged the poll body to take cognisance of the matter.

The TMC youth wing president was speaking in a live interaction on Facebook when he made the allegation.

Abhishek Banerjee said that the TMC announced the cancellation of public meetings hours after EC banned roadshows, rallies and permitted public meetings only with a maximum of 500 people. But the BJP is refusing to follow the new norms endangering several lives, he claimed in a live virtual interaction.

He went on to allege that 10,000 people had attended BJP's rally at Malda where actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty was also present.

"The EC allowed rallies with 500 people but did nothing to monitor the restriction. The EC should have clubbed the remaining phases (of the election)," the nephew of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said.

The saffron party has no concern for people's lives, he added.

Abhishek Banerjee also attacked PM Narendra Modi over the export of the Covid-19 vaccine.

"The PM deprived 130 crore people of the country and sent the Covid-19 vaccine to 80 countries to boost his image. Now there are around 3 lakh cases and 2000 deaths daily in the country," he said accusing the Modi government of mishandling the situation.

He further claimed that in BJP-ruled states such as Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, people unable to get beds in hospitals, they are crying for oxygen on streets, and crematoriums are overflowing with bodies.

He reiterated the pitch for aunt and incumbent West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee saying that to prevent such a situation from occurring in West Bengal, one needs to have her at the helm as she had successfully dealt with the coronavirus situation last year.

The eight-phase West Bengal assembly election is finally nearing its conclusion with only 2 phases remaining. The Phase 7 polling will take place on April 26, Monday for 36 seats. Phase 8 will take place on April 29, Thursday for 35 seats.
