My Surname Neither Modi Nor Choksi, Will Never Escape: TMC's Abhishek Banerjee

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that his surname is neither Modi nor Mallya and that he would not escape in face of any kind of pressure.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday said that his surname was neither “Modi” nor “Mallya” and that he is not a person who would escape in the face of any sort of pressure. He said that he went abroad for a medical treatment and a rumour was spread that he had escaped the country. The Lok Sabha MP said that if there would be any evidence against him about being involved in any kind of corruption there will not be a requirement for further investigation or trial and he will voluntarily hang himself publicly, as per an IANS report. 

Addressing a gathering on the occasion of TMC’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in Kolkata, Banerjee said, ““I went abroad for my ophthalmological treatment. A rumour was floated that I had escaped from the country. I want to make one thing clear. My surname is not ‘Modi’. Nor is it ‘Mallya’ or ‘Choksi’.” 

“My surname is Banerjee. My name is Abhishek Banerjee. I know how to fight with my head high. I do not know the art of bowing down to pressure and surrendering to New Delhi. I will never escape in face of any kind of pressure,” he asserted. 

The TMC national general secretary is being probed in the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. 

Denying the allegations by the Opposition of massive violence unleashed by the ruling TMC party in the recently-concluded panchayat polls in West Bengal, he said that there had been a record number of nominations by the opposition forces this time.

“Even after that Trinamool Congress got elected in the majority of the seats in most districts. This would not have been possible without the spontaneous support of the people,” Banerjee said.

Speaking on the Jadavpur University incident where a first-year student died subjected to ragging, he lambasted a section of the university students who are still opposing the installation of CCTV cameras within the campus. 

Without taking names, he targeted Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its students’ wing, Students’ Federation of India saying, ““Those who approached the Calcutta High Court demanding installation of CCTV cameras at polling booths are now opposing CCTV cameras within JU campus. But we are determined to ensure installation of CCTV cameras within the JU campus.”
