NEW DELHI: The Mumbai Police from its Twitter handle shared a post urging the social media users to verify the authenticity of the messages and news before they hit the share button. They posted a template "Verify Before You Share" on the micro-blogging site, cautioning people to be aware of fake news and rumours. However, the post went viral and sparked a meme fest on Twitter.

The tweet started attracting a lot of peculiar comments with some asking the police to "verify" before they "arrest" while others demanding that the cops should "investigate properly" before they take accused in custody. Some even urged the city police should first take action against actor Priyanka Chopra for bursting crackers in her pre-wedding ceremony.

"Great verify before you make innocent culprit. Verify before involving in corruption yourself. Verify before influencing the case for many and honey. Please verify yourself," a user tweeted.

Some were of the opinion that the Tweet by Mumbai Police has "backfired".
