New Delhi: The Mumbai cyber police have arrested one more student - 21-year-old Mayank Rawal - from Uttarakhand in the 'Bulli Bai' app case. Rawal was arrested on Wednesday morning, PTI reported.
This is the second arrest from Uttarakhand. Earlier, the prime accused Shweta Singh was also arrested from the state by Mumbai Police's cyber cell. An engineering student Vishal Kumar Jha (21) from Bengaluru was also arrested in connection with the case.
Police had that said both the accused know each other and were running the fake accounts on the 'Bulli Bai' app. The police have taken the accused in custody till January 10.
"Three people have been arrested in the 'Bulli Bai' app case, including Vishal Kumar Jha and Shweta Singh. The third accused is Shweta's friend. Some more people could be involved in this matter," Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said.
"The main accused woman was handling three accounts related to the 'Bulli Bai' app. Co-accused Vishal Kumar opened an account by the name Khalsa supremacist. On Dec 31, he changed the names of other accounts to resemble Sikh names. Fake Khalsa account holders were shown," Mumbai Police was quoted by ANI.
Police had filed a first information report against unknown persons following complaints that photographs of Muslim women were uploaded for auction' on the app called 'Bulli Bai', hosted on the open-source software platform GitHub.
Hundreds of Muslim women were listed for the auction' on the 'Bulli Bai' app with photographs sourced without permission and doctored. It has happened for the second time in less than a year. The app appeared to be a clone of Sulli Deals which triggered a similar row last year.
The Mumbai cyber police station has also registered a case against the app's unidentified developers and Twitter handles which promoted it.
